Would you like to be an Assistant Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine?

An Assistant Professor is a career position aimed at progressing towards an Associate professorship. As an Assistant Professor, you are expected to both teach and develop an independent clinical research profile.
You can be employed as an Assistant Professor for a maximum of 4 years, regardless of whether you are employed full-time or part-time.

How do you become an Assistant Professor?
Most Assistant Professors at the Department of Clinical Medicine (DCM) have created their positions themselves, funded by external, earmarked funds. This always happens in close collaboration with a hiring manager. Some are employed because they have applied for an advertised position.

Before moving forward – are the prerequisites in place?

  • Yes, there is external funding for my salary from funds or from my hospital department/my center

You/your hiring manager need to find approximately 628,000 DKK per year (AU's 2024 figures - subject to negotiation). Some Assistant Professors work part-time, for example, one day a week (cost approximately 125,600 DKK per year), and the remaining 4 days in a clinic. It depends on an individual professional assessment what is realistic, as there is a maximum of 4 years to prepare for the Associate Professor evaluation.

How do you proceed?
When you and your manager can confirm the above, your manager should contact the secretariat at DCM who will then:

  • Equip the hiring manager with the templates to be completed for a pre-screening at one of DCM's monthly recruitment meetings with the department management and the faculty's vice-dean for research
  •  Inform the hiring manager about the schedule, including the assessment process, which you, according to the general principles of integrity and arm's length, are not involved in planning.
  • Ensure that the assessment and hiring process proceed at DCM and in HR – including obtaining necessary financial approvals
  • Check that your plans actually lead towards the associate professorship - see criteria for Associate Professor evaluation

When can you start the job?
Expect that it will take at least 3 months from your manager contacting the secretariat until you can start as an Assistant Professor.
