Would you like to be a Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine?

As a Professor, you publish research articles of high international standard in the best and most recognized journals within your field. You are a strong researcher and internationally oriented, experienced research leader who can ensure a good research environment, leading and inspiring the next generation. Ph.D. supervision and educational leadership tasks are included.

How do you become a Professor?
Most Professors at the Department of Clinical Medicine (IKM) have created their professorship through external funding, commonly known as earmarked funds. This process always happens in close collaboration with an appointing manager. Some Professors at IKM have been employed because they applied for an advertised position.

Before proceeding, are the prerequisites in place?

  • Yes, I have found an appointing manager at IKM whom I can refer to daily (for professional sparring, assistance in seeking funding, MUS discussions, etc.), and who supports my appointment as a Professor – this could be another Professor, a senior Professor, or a chair Professor
  • Yes, there is external funding available for my salary from grants or from my hospital department/center

You/my leader need to find an average of 880,000 DKK per year (AU's 2024 figures – subject to salary negotiations) for a full-time professorship – preferably for a minimum of 3 and ideally 5 years (because you can only be extended a maximum of two times as a temporary Professor). Some Professors work part-time, for example, one day a week (costing approximately 175,000 DKK per year), and the remaining 4 days in a clinical position. Note that one day a week (20% employment) is the lowest accepted employment level in academic positions.

Do you meet the formal requirements?

  • Yes, I have a highly independent research profile of high international quality and a well-founded research plan with very good international collaborations. I have extensive experience in leading research projects and groups. I have a strong track record of securing research funding for both me and my research group
  • Yes, I have extensive experience in teaching at bachelor, master, and possibly Ph.D. and postgraduate levels
  • Yes, I have completed at least one (preferably more) successful Ph.D. supervision
  • Yes, I have completed courses in university pedagogy or similar

How do you proceed?
When you and your leader can confirm the above, your leader should contact the secretariat at IKM, which will then:

  • Equip the appointing manager with the templates to be completed for a pre-screening at one of IKM's monthly recruitment meetings with the department's management and the faculty's deputy dean for research
  • Inform the appointing manager about the schedule, including the assessment process, which, according to the general principles of integrity and arm's length, you are not involved in planning
  • Ensure that the assessment and hiring process progresses at IKM and in HR, including obtaining necessary financial approvals

When can you start the job?
Expect it to take 6 months (sometimes more) to become a Professor from the moment your leader contacts the secretariat until you can start.
