As an associate professor, you will have an independent research profile and are expected to publish to a high international standard in recognized journals within your field. You will both conduct research and teach and may serve as the main supervisor for PhD students. This applies regardless of employment percentage.
You are typically employed for 3-5 years with the possibility of extension.
How do you become an associate professor?
Most associate professors at the Department of Clinical Medicine (DCM) have created their associate professorship themselves, funded by external, earmarked funds. This always happens in close collaboration with a hiring manager. Some associate professors at DCM have been employed because they applied for an advertised position.

Before moving forward – are the prerequisites in place?
You/your hiring manager need to find an average of 740,000 DKK per year (AU’s 2024 figures – subject to negotiation) for a full-time associate professorship – minimum 3 and preferably 5 years (because you can only be extended a maximum of two times as a time-limited associate professor).
Some associate professors work part-time, for example, one day a week (cost approximately 148,000 DKK per year), and the remaining 4 days in a clinic. Please note that one day a week (20% employment) is the lowest accepted employment percentage in academic positions.
