Would you like to be an Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine?

As an associate professor, you will have an independent research profile and are expected to publish to a high international standard in recognized journals within your field. You will both conduct research and teach and may serve as the main supervisor for PhD students. This applies regardless of employment percentage.

You are typically employed for 3-5 years with the possibility of extension.

How do you become an associate professor?
Most associate professors at the Department of Clinical Medicine (DCM) have created their associate professorship themselves, funded by external, earmarked funds. This always happens in close collaboration with a hiring manager. Some associate professors at DCM have been employed because they applied for an advertised position.

Before moving forward – are the prerequisites in place?

  • Yes, I have found a hiring manager at DCM at a minimum associate professor level whom I can refer to daily (for professional sparring, assistance in seeking funds, performance appraisal discussions, etc.) – and the chair professor/department leader supports my associate professorship
  • Yes, there is external funding for my salary from funds or from my hospital department/my center

You/your hiring manager need to find an average of 740,000 DKK per year (AU’s 2024 figures – subject to negotiation) for a full-time associate professorship – minimum 3 and preferably 5 years (because you can only be extended a maximum of two times as a time-limited associate professor).

Some associate professors work part-time, for example, one day a week (cost approximately 148,000 DKK per year), and the remaining 4 days in a clinic. Please note that one day a week (20% employment) is the lowest accepted employment percentage in academic positions.

Do you meet the formal requirements?

  • Yes, I have an independent research profile of high international quality and a well-founded research plan. I also have experience in leading research projects and leading/inspiring other researchers
  • Yes, I am actively seeking funding for my own research projects
  • Yes, I have extensive experience in teaching at the bachelor's, master's, and possibly Ph.D. and postgraduate levels
  • I have completed courses in pedagogy (if not - I am aware of my pending task, which must be completed no later than 2 years after my associate professor appointment)

How do you proceed?
When you and your manager can confirm the above, your manager should contact the secretariat at DCM, who will then:

  • Equip the hiring manager with the templates to be completed for a pre-screening at one of DCM's monthly recruitment meetings with the department management and the faculty's vice-dean for research
  •  Inform the hiring manager about the schedule, including the assessment process, which you, according to the general principles of integrity and arm's length, are not involved in planning
  • Ensure that the assessment and hiring process proceed at DCM and in HR – including obtaining necessary financial approvals

When can you start the job?
Expect that it will take 4 months (sometimes more) from your manager contacting the secretariat until you can start as an associate professor.
