Would you like to be a Clinical Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine?

As a Clinical Professor, you are employed as a consultant physician at a hospital and hold an honorary scientific employment at the Department of Clinical Medicine. Typically, half of your clinical working time is allocated for university-related tasks such as teaching, research, and supervision. Your research is of the highest international standard and often focuses on one or more highly specialized clinical areas.

How do you become a Clinical Professor?
Many Clinical Professors at the Department of Clinical Medicine (DCM) have established their clinical professorship themselves, funded by external, earmarked funds. This always happens in close collaboration with your departmental leadership and a chair Professor. Few Clinical Professors at DCM have been employed because they applied for an advertised position.

Before moving forward – are the prerequisites in place?

  • Yes, I have found a hiring manager at DCM whom I can refer to daily (for professional sparring, assistance in seeking funds, MUS discussions, etc.) and who supports my appointment as a Clinical Professor. My hiring manager will typically be the chair Professor within my medical specialty, alternatively a leading Professor
  • Yes, there is external funding for both my release time and my professor’s salary from funds or from my hospital department/my center

You/your hiring manager need to find 250,000 DKK per year (AU's 2024 figures) for a professor’s salary. Additionally, you are released from a consultant position, typically 50% of your clinical work, to perform university-related tasks. The costs for your release will depend on your consultant salary - contact your hospital's HR department to find out the cost of your release.
You must be employed as a Clinical Professor for a minimum of 3 and preferably 5 years (because you can only be extended a maximum of two times as a time-limited Clinical Professor).
As a Clinical Professor, you are released for a minimum of 20% of your time to perform university-related tasks (including research). There is no upper limit to how much of your consultant position you are released from, but the norm is 50%. Regardless of how much you are released for university-related tasks, the cost for the professor’s salary remains the same.

Do you meet the formal requirements?

How do you proceed?
When you and your manager can confirm the above, your manager should contact the secretariat at DCM, who will then:

  • Provide the hiring manager with the templates to be completed for a pre-screening at one of DCM's monthly recruitment meetings with the department management and the faculty's vice-dean for research
  • Inform the hiring manager about the schedule, including the assessment process, which you, according to the general principles of integrity and arm's length, are not involved in planning
  • Ensure that the hospital management at your hospital approves the appointment as a clinical professor at the department
  • Ensure that the assessment and appointment process progress at DCM and in HR – including obtaining the necessary financial approvals

When can you start the job?
Expect that it will take a minimum of 6 months (sometimes more) to become a Clinical Professor from when your manager contacts the secretariat until you can start.
