On 1 January 2026, the Surgical Department at Regional Hospital Randers will establish a new university clinic in coloproctology (diseases of the colon and rectum) and endoscopy (endoscopic examinations).

With the new university clinic, the department will focus on research into common diseases, including diverticula of the colon, cysts and abscesses of the buttocks, and precursors to cancer in the intestinal tract.

"These are diseases that are characterised by being quite common, but unfortunately also underrepresented in existing research both nationally and internationally," says Katrine J. Emmertsen, who will take up the position of clinical professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine on 15 December 2025 and will lead the new university clinic.

"Our research will contribute to improvements in disease understanding, dissemination, diagnostics and treatment with a focus on giving patients a better quality of life," she adds.

A great recognition

Achieving university clinic status requires extensive and targeted work, and chief physician at the Surgical Department Anne-Sofie Kannerup is delighted that this has now been accomplished.

"We are extremely proud to be granted university clinic status. It is recognition of the dedicated work that the entire team of staff has put into both the clinical work and research. The university clinic now gives us the opportunity to expand our research and practice for the benefit of patients," she says.

The establishment of the new university clinic in Randers is also an important step for the Department of Clinical Medicine, which now has further opportunities to anchor research close to clinical practice and patients.

"Congratulations on the new university clinic in Randers, which is yet another good example of how high-quality research-based knowledge can be translated into concrete patient treatment through collaboration between the university and the region's hospitals," says Jørgen Frøkiær, head of the Department of Clinical Medicine.
