Health researcher receives the “Oscar of hand surgery”

Clinical Associate Professor Janni Kjærgaard Thillemann from the Department of Clinical Medicine has been awarded the Linscheid-Dobyns Excellence in Wrist Surgery Award. She receives the prize for her research in wrist surgery, and the prize is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the field.

Janni Kjærgaard Thillemann conducts research on joint mobility with a particular focus on the wrist. She investigates which surgical treatments benefit patients the most and reduce the risk of pain and osteoarthritis resulting from, among other things, ligament injuries and bone fractures.

In October, she received the Linscheid-Dobyns Excellence in Wrist Surgery Award for her scientific work in developing a new imaging method that can 3D-visualize instability in the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) during movement and load.

“Ligament injuries in the wrist can be very difficult to assess using the existing methods. Our 3D method provides wrist surgery with an entirely new and innovative tool to evaluate the extent of injuries and offer individualized treatment – to the benefit of our patients.”

Says Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Janni Kjærgaard Thillemann, who is also a consultant at Aarhus University Hospital and Regionshospitalet Gødstrup.

“The award is a major international recognition of the innovative development work carried out in our research group, AutoRSA. I expect the award will contribute positively to our current and future research projects,” says Janni Kjærgaard Thillemann, and continues:

“Several of our PhD students are working with the same imaging method, but within other types of joint injuries. Here, the 3D method will help us document the effect of new surgical techniques.”

The Linscheid-Dobyns Excellence in Wrist Surgery Award is one of the highest professional recognitions a wrist surgeon can achieve, and this is the first time the award has been given to a European researcher.
